Bigorio Monastery: History & Hospitality

Founded in 1535 as the first Capuchin monastery in Switzerland, the Bigorio Monastery gained its current architectural character during a major restoration in 1767. A notable highlight of the grounds is the strikingly modern chapel, an early masterpiece designed by the renowned architect Mario Botta.

The monastery is celebrated for its spirit of openness, reaching far beyond regional borders to welcome both groups and individuals. It remains a vital spiritual and cultural landmark for the local community. For several decades, the convent has also served as a premier venue for seminars, workshops, and training retreats.

Perched high within lush chestnut forests—well away from the clamor of daily life—the monastery offers a sanctuary of peace and quiet. This serene environment fosters meaningful interaction, personal reflection, and the exchange of ideas. Furthermore, its expansive terraces and shaded pergolas provide breathtaking panoramic views of Capriasca, the Lugano region, and its stunning lake.
